Nuevo Vallarta - Puerto Vallarta distance

We recently booked a trip at a hotel in Nuevo Vallarta not understanding it wasn't really in Puerto Vallarta. I really want to go downtown Puerto Vallarta and to the Melacon. How far is it to get there and is transportation easy or very long rides and expensive?
